Musical Guest: BLIND BARTIMAEUS

After many years performing in blues bands, country bands, and punk bands, in Portland, Oregon, as well as in his native Michigan, Santi Elijah Holley took a three-year break from playing music, to pursue
literary ambitions. He published a handful of short stories and essays, completed a novel, and worked with Tin House, a national literary magazine. In 2010, when Holley returned to writing music, he
combined his literary experience with his songwriting, composing songs with compelling narratives and memorable characters.
Holley adopted the pseudonym Blind Bartimaeus—after a cryptic figure from the Gospel of Mark, and also as homage to blind, pre-war blues musicians—and he began performing his songs in venues in Portland. Liz Chibucos, a talented multi-instrumentalist and Ohio native, soon joined Holley, revamping Blind Bartimaeus as a duo. Contributing violin and backup vocals, Chibucos adds a somber, gypsy presence to Blind Bartimaeus.
Influenced by country-blues musicians like Blind Willie McTell, Reverend Gary Davis, and Mississippi John Hurt, as well as such contemporary artists as Gillian Welch, Tom Waits, and Justin Townes Earle, Blind Bartimaeus composes songs with stripped-down melodies and elegiac lyrics, with stories of murder, love, drugs, God, and other timeless themes.
